'Army Wives' embarks on second tour of duty on U.S. Lifetime network

LOS ANGELES - It's been called "Desperate Housewives" on an Army base. Lifetime just calls it the network's signature hit.

As the highest-rated series in the channel's 24-year history, "Army Wives" premiered strong last summer with 3.5 million viewers and it continued to attract solid ratings throughout its run, becoming the signature drama the network had been hoping for.

"The goal for us was to have a show that would really become Lifetime's defining show in terms of a drama, not unlike what 'The Closer' has done for TNT or 'Monk' for USA," says Lifetime's president of entertainment Susanne Daniels.

And men were watching, too.

"It has the most co-viewing probably of any particular program on Lifetime," adds Daniels. "We got a lot of feedback from our viewers (saying), 'Oh my god, something on Lifetime that my husband wants to watch with me!' That wasn't a specific goal of ours at all, but that was a nice benefit."

On the phone from Charleston, S.C., where "Army Wives" is filmed, creator and executive producer Katherine Fugate calls it a dream scenario: "You just sit there when it first airs going, 'OK does anyone else see what we did?' But the second season is a different pressure now. It's, 'How do you maintain it?' "

How about start with a surprise conclusion to last season's finale cliffhanger?

In the season opener, airing June 8, the band of Army wives - and the lone Army husband - are struggling with the emotional aftermath of the bombing at their on-base hangout, the Hump Bar, and the unexpected casualty that follows.

"I can't say exactly what happens but somebody dies," reveals former "JAG" star Catherine Bell, who plays military wife and mom Denise Sherwood. "So it's all of us dealing with that the first couple of episodes back, maybe three, and then we all start to get back to our lives."

Though the series is based on Tanya Biank's nonfiction book "Under The Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives," some in the cast say they've informed their characters by the stories of real-life military families - and soldiers - they've met at nearby Fort Bragg. As art often imitates life, even recent headline stories - Army wives serving as surrogate mothers and abetting friendly-fire cover-ups - have made their way into the series.

"We certainly try to stay nonpolitical on the show," says Bell. "We don't want to get into that in terms of the war and that kind of thing, but of course it's so much in our face right now ... it would be impossible to avoid."

And yet, says co-star Brigid Brannagh, "no matter how dramatic we can write a story, these (real life Army wives) are living something much more dramatic.

"It's really amazing that they deal with children and money and really plain issues right alongside really, really dramatic life-and-death issues everyday," says Brannagh, who plays Delta Force bride Pamela Moran. "It's the tiny little things: about a wife making a cut-out of her husband - a life sized cut out, for her kids - that kind of just blow you away because they start to really matter when you're dealing with life and death."

Brannagh says it's these extremes that drew her to Steven Bochco's short-lived Iraq war drama "Over There," where she also played a military wife, but a vastly different one who hated the Army and had a drinking problem. "But both of them deal with, again, that same life and death," says the actress.

In playing the show's only female military officer, and only African American soldier, Wendy Davis actually relishes the emotional battering Lt. Colonel Joan Burton takes. "She's the drama queen of the crew," giggles Davis.

"She's a very interesting character because she is a woman in a man's world. We're not just talking about the corporate world, we're talking about the Army!" she says. "So it's very challenging to let your husband be the leader in the home when, during the day, what you're doing is telling men what to do and dominating them constantly. And sometimes she's soft on the military side and too hard in the marriage. That's what makes her fun to play, 'cause I think she gets it wrong all the time."

Lifetime upped the episode order for "Army Wives" this season, with 13 shows airing this summer and the final six rolling out by year's end. For Fugate, it's the blessing and curse of success.

"If I think about 19 (episodes), my head starts hurting," laughs Fugate of her increased workload, "so I have to think, 'I'm on episode four!' I'm doing this today. But the good thing is you do have more time to let things play out and you can delve a little deeper into the characters and their personal dilemmas . . . and that actually gives you a lot of grace, too."

Tom Cruise - Celebrity Rehab Doctor Apologises After Cruise Remarks

Dr Drew Pinsky, the Celebrity Rehab therapist, has apologised after questioning Tom Cruise's mental health.

Pinsky, who treats substance-abusing celebrities such as Brigitte Nielsen on the reality shown, questioned why Cruise had been "drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology" while being interviewed for the July issue of Playboy.

"To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood — maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect," he added.

Pinsky, who hosts the syndicated US radio show Loveline, has since issued an apology through his representative.

"Dr Drew meant no harm to Mr Cruise and apologizes if his comments were hurtful," it read.

However, Cruise's attorney Bert Fields has reacted angrily to Pinsky's remarks, calling him a "posturing flake".

"This unqualified television performer, who is obviously just looking for notoriety, is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them," he told the New York Post newspaper.

"He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels."

The war of words has continued, with a new statement from Pinsky's representative stressing that he "meant no harm".

"Although Mr Fields' intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr Drew, under no circumstances is Dr Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr Cruise whom he does not know," he said.

"Dr Drew was simply using Mr Cruise as an example of someone who is recognisable to help the public understand."

Young Jeezy, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross, Grateful For Their Spots On 'Hottest MCs' List

Hate it or love it, MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game" list is well respected — just ask the artists themselves.

"MTV, y'all's top 10 is the certified top 10," Game said last week on Ed Lover's Power 105.1 radio show, when the Compton star was interviewed with several members of MTV's Hip-Hop Brain Trust. "I don't think it's another top 10. People scramble [to see] who's the best MCs all year. I don't think fans respect anything more than MTV's list."

"Justice! Justice! Justice for the downtrodden and the oppressed!" Lupe Fiasco yelled recently at a stop on Kanye West's Glow in the Dark Tour when MTV News correspondent Sway told him he was one of our "Hottest MCs in the Game." "Justice does exist in this world, ladies and gentlemen."

Lupe was very vocal when he was left off last year's list — and didn't even receive an honorable mention. "Yeah, I went and found all of the individual board members and asked them what was up," Fiasco said. "It feels good, man. I used that as motivation. I took that as, 'Oh, OK. I'll be back.' And I came back with a vengeance. [The Cool] is gold. Smash record that was nine weeks at #1. The bells and whistles and everything that comes with it. So, you know, I'm happy. I'm happy. A Grammy that just came out of nowhere. It feels good, man, the work. So now I've got to find something else to motivate me again, so I can be the underdog. I like being the underdog. I like that. It feels like you've got something to achieve. You wake up in the morning with a purpose."

Lupe placed seventh — one above Young Jeezy.

"I love Jeezy. Jeezy's got charisma," Fiasco said of the Snowman. "Even with the stuff he talks about — people say it's worlds away and worlds apart — I come from the world that Jeezy comes from. I'm from the 'hood and the whole situation. And the way he articulates it ... it motivates you. Like that's what his first album was, Thug Motivation. It really is like he's a motivational speaker, the charisma and the energy that he puts into the record. ... Like Tupac, the way he gives it and the way he says it and the ad libs, the whole thing. The way he sets it up for you. It's just phenomenal."

Mr. 17.5 was in his Dirty South Studio in Atlanta when he was told he made the list. "I'mma respect that, though," Jeezy said. "I feel at the end of the day, I take what I do very seriously. You only gonna get out what you put in."

Jeezy did take a brief hiatus last year after putting out the USDA album. But he's since gone on a tear with cameos, catapulting him into the top 10. "Sometimes you gotta give it a break," Young said. "You can't be all over the place all the time. It has to be an event when you jump on something. Normally you wouldn't do that. Now I'm on it. If it sounds right, I'm on it. If [the song] sounds right and I like it, I'm on it. I don't need no money or nothing."

Rick Ross, whose swagger and lyrics have been a staple in the game this past year, earned the #4 spot on the 2008 list.

"You get into best of the best," the boss said about going top five. "You looking at moguls, entrepreneurs, bosses when you crack that top five. That's where the boy wants to be. That's where everybody should aspire to be if you in the game and wanna go to that next level."

Ross was delighted to make the list. He felt he's come a long way. "Just being a fan of the game and coming from the streets and now participating in the countdown is something you can be proud of. It's definitely an accomplishment. It's all good, man."

Ross names Cash Money Millionaire key players Lil Wayne and Baby as being in his personal top five. He also likes Jay-Z and Kanye West.

"His presentation!" Ross said of why he respects West. "The level, the art. You see the art when you look at it. It definitely inspires you. Even if it's a different genre, a different lane, it still is gonna inspire you. I get that from Kanye. Listening to different records, it sounds like he made them for arenas.

"Jay's the best," Ricky Ross continued. "It's not even a comparison. Hands down ... Jay's the best. Either way you look at it, from the music standpoint to the accolades to the new GMC Jay-Z Denali. So Jay, that's how he's been able to remain relevant. He's the best."

Now that you've checked out our "Hottest MCs in the Game" show, we want to know what MCs you're feeling! Keep the debate rolling by submitting your own top-10 list below or heading to YouRHere.MTV.com to upload your video reaction. And the hotness continues: You can check in on last year's top 10 and see this year's complete list on our "Hottest MCs" page.

'Twilight' Tuesday Exclusive: Stephenie Meyer Announces 'Breaking Dawn' Tour Dates With Blue October's Justin Furstenfeld

For as long as they can remember, Twilighters worldwide have been counting down the days to the release of the final book in the best-selling vampire saga. Now, MTV News has an exclusive announcement that will give fans one more reason to start lining up.

To celebrate the release of "Breaking Dawn," author Stephenie Meyer will attend four story-and-song-fueled special events, accompanied by Blue October singer/songwriter Justin Furstenfeld. Insisting the mini-tour idea is "cooler than anything I could have imagined," Meyer has made plans for the following dates:

· 8/1 - New York City @ Nokia Theater at Times Square

· 8/5 - Chicago @ Harris Theater

· 8/7 - Los Angeles @ Royce Hall

· 8/12 - Seattle @ Benaroya Hall

Tickets for the "Breaking Dawn" concert series are $20 each and go on sale June 21 at 10 a.m. ET; information on where to buy them will be posted soon on StephenieMeyer.com and on TheTwilightSaga.com. After the concerts, fans can get autographs from Meyer. New York attendees will receive a limited edition "Breaking Dawn" bookplate, while fans at the other shows can bring their favorite Meyer novel for signing.

To help us make the big announcement as part of this week's Twilight Tuesday, an excited Furstenfeld was eager to talk about his most famous fan, the songs that inspired the author and whether he'll be appearing on the soundtrack to the "Twilight" movie.

MTV: How did you and Stephenie cook up these big plans?

Justin Furstenfeld: It's actually quite an honor. We got a call from Stephenie Meyer's publisher and manager, and I was told that some of my songs were quoted [as an influence] for her books. I had always been a fan of hers, and I was like, "What?" And next thing we knew, we'd come up with this question-and-answer, creative-writing concert series thing that's going on.

MTV: For people who aren't aware, take us through a few of Stephenie's playlist references to you.

Furstenfeld: When she wrote her book "New Moon," she quoted me for songs that had inspired her, she said, and she put us on her playlist. She has this thing called a playlist for all her readers. ...That song was "Hate Me." ... Also, the inspiration for some of "Eclipse" was a song called "Overweight," which was from our last album. And another song that helped inspire part of that book was a song called "Congratulations."

MTV: How, exactly, will these four events be going down?

Furstenfeld: Oh, it's a really classy kind of thing going on here. It's not just a regular rock-and-roll show. It'll be some question-and-answer stuff about creative writing, how I write my poetry and how she writes her books. And I'll play a few songs, and we'll have a good time.

MTV: Are you aware of the — how can I put this? — enthusiastic tendencies of "Twilight" fans?

Furstenfeld: I've just started understanding how ridiculous it is. ... It's almost like when I was a kid and I used to read Stephen King a lot; I was just like a cult follower. Anything he put out, I read in two days. She's like the Stephen King of today, but less gruesome. [Laughs.]

MTV: Blue October has a lot of die-hard fans too. Which fan base do you expect to be dominating these shows?

Furstenfeld: Stephenie Meyer's fans can hold their own. I'm just looking forward to meeting a lot of new people. If some of our fans show up, that's even better, because they'll be introduced to Stephenie Meyer's fan base. It's going to be crazy.

MTV: Tell us about the first time you and Stephenie ever met.

Furstenfeld: We're actually meeting this next week to listen to some music. We've never met face to face. We've just been complimenting each other via managers and via cell phones.

MTV: Everyone is dying to know what music will be in December's "Twilight" movie. Is this why you're previewing tunes for Stephenie? A mini-audition?

Furstenfeld: It's up in the air. I can't comment on that. We're going to see what happens when we meet and talk. I sure would love to score some of her movies, or have a song or two in it.

MTV: You've made no secret of your own personal struggles with substance abuse. Do you see similarities with the way the "Twilight" characters need to suppress their urges, resist their addictions, etc.?

Furstenfeld: Yes, and through her books and through some of my stuff, we touch upon issues that some people don't understand. It becomes an addiction and an obsession, and a disease, and you have to get to a place where you find that happy comfortable spot, and you try and live one day at a time.

MTV: I would think that, artist to artist, you're both eager to compare notes.

Furstenfeld: I can't wait to have that conversation with her. I want her to see this side of me, that music is therapy for me.

MTV: When you finally meet, who is more likely to ask for the first autograph?

Furstenfeld: I'm going to ask her for an autograph! What do you think? How many books has she sold?

Every Tuesday is "Twilight Tuesday" here at MTV News!
